For the 2019 International Horticultural Exposition, held in Peking, China, JTB Communication Design (JCD) took on the task of designing, constructing and managing the Japan Pavilion and exhibits. Also see our report on our work for the 2016 International Horticultural Exposition, right here.

JCD has lent its support to the International Horticultural Exposition for 9 editions since 1992, always striving to deliver the best Japanese experience possible. At previous editions, the garden zone and the inside pavilion were located at different locations in the park. This resulted in activities taking place at one of the two locations, often situated on opposite sides of the park, causing confusion for attendees. Therefore, JCD proposed the idea to combine forces to let everything take place in a single location. With centralizing everything at a single pavilion under the concept of “All Japan”, it offered the complete Japanese experience for visitors.

Discovering Japan
As with previous editions of this world-renowned world expo, JCD worked closely together with the exhibition organizers and the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in designing and creating a stunning pavilion that breathes Japanese culture and showcases the best Japan has to offer. The theme of the pavilion was clear: Discovering Japan. With this official slogan in mind, JCD wanted to implement a design that would transport visitors to Japan as soon as they set foot on the pavilion grounds.

As guests enter the grounds, they are brought into the calm world that represents the beauty of Japanese nature: a Japanese garden. A wide pond is situated at its center with colorful koi fish swimming up and down, brings live to the garden grounds. The garden is designed to meet the fundamental idea of the pavilion, to have the environment co-exist together with the architecture in harmony.

Experiencing Japan in another country
Once inside, the visitor enters an area that is modeled after a classic Japanese interior, styled with tatami mats areas and corners that display various flora. Not only the Japanese flower art of Ikebana can be viewed, but also a bonsai tree area and a large variety of Japanese flower species.

In the middle of the pavilion, a main exhibition stand was set up where throughout the expo period various workshops, events and performances are held by different prefectures, associations and academies coming in from all over Japan. Throughout the half year exhibition period, JCD supports and manages these workshops and performances to make everything run smoothly.

With our expert knowledge on both decoration and Japanese culture, this exhibition brings together our company’s strengths to welcome visitors into a world that be it far away from Japan, still offers an atmosphere where the Japanese culture can be deeply felt. Leading staff member Noriko Shiotani oversees this project, read an interview with her on our Bulletin page!

We at JCD take pride in creating immersive environments for your event, using Japanese cultural elements to connect a location with a delightful and lively atmosphere. Attendees love to be emerged in another culture. When it comes to the bringing the Japanese culture to life, we as a Japanese company and event specialist know how to finetune the environment to bring out the best emergence possible.
